The artist and the farmer both stretch their canvases. The artist stretches a smooth surface while the farmer stretches a ridged surface which creates a distinct painterly effect.
Farmers paint on their hay bales to deter birds, notably the intelligent crow, from opening the wrap and ruining the hay as oxygen is allowed in.
Similar to the sheep series these markings are created for functionality rather than the aesthetic. However, where the sheep markings communicate with humans, these emotive bale markings are intended to communicate with the animal world.
