A tondo is a Renaissance term for a circular work of art. The word derives from the Italian rotondo, round. This painting is inspired by a rare, striking pattern found in the countryside which is made when a specific bale wrapping machine is loaded with 2 different coloured rolls of wrap.

The paint is built up in overlapping stripes, 1 by 1, the same way a bale is wrapped. A custom imperfect circular canvas was built to mimic a real bale where lumps of hay bulge when wrapped.
