I have a working theory that the more rural farmers on the west coast have a looser hand when they mark their bales with paint, spray paint and tape. The markings draw a comparison to expressionist painting, emerging from the unconscious and evoking different moods and ideas.
.
Calligraphic and graffiti-like, expressive marks for protection. Farmers paint on their hay bales to deter birds from opening the wrap and ruining the hay as oxygen is allowed in.
Similar to the sheep series these markings are created for functionality rather than the aesthetic. However, where the sheep markings communicate with humans, these emotive bale markings are intended to communicate with the animal world.
